New PC Won't Turn On: Power and Front-Panel Checks

When a new PC does nothing after you press the case button, work from the external power source toward the internal connections. The aim is to identify the next useful check without live probing, improvised jumpers or opening the power supply.

Check external power, then inspect the front-panel and required power connections with mains power disconnected. Escalate a suspected PSU fault to a proper swap test.

1. Separate no power from no picture

Observe the system once and write down exactly what happens: no response, a brief fan twitch, repeated cycling or steady running with no image. A motherboard standby light means some power is present, but it does not prove that the complete system can start. Likewise, a stationary PSU fan alone is not a dependable failure test because some supplies have a fan-stop mode. If the system remains running and only the picture is missing, use the no-display guide instead.

2. Check the external supply path

Confirm that the outlet works with a known working appliance and that any power strip is switched on. Inspect the mains cable externally and check its seating at the PSU and outlet. Use a cable with the correct connector and electrical rating if testing a replacement. Check the PSU's rear on/off switch where fitted. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips when the PC is connected, and do not test with damaged plugs or burnt connectors. Disconnect the PC and obtain qualified help for those symptoms.

3. Make the machine safe before opening it

Turn the PSU off and remove the mains cable before inspecting or changing internal connections. Follow the product manual's discharge procedure and wait for standby indicators to go out. This does not make the inside of a PSU safe: leave its enclosure closed. Photograph the existing cable arrangement first. Keep screws and tools away from exposed contacts, and restore one connection at a time. If the cable labels or motherboard diagram are unclear, identify them before reconnecting power.

4. Trace the case power button

Locate the front-panel header in the exact motherboard manual, then trace the case cable labelled POWER SW or its equivalent. Make sure it is on the specified power-switch pins rather than a nearby LED or reset pair. A connector shifted sideways can look attached while missing its intended contacts. Check for a trapped or visibly damaged cable and a physically stuck case button. Use a documented onboard start button if the board provides one; do not bridge live pins with a screwdriver or improvise a switch test.

5. Verify required motherboard and GPU power

Check the main motherboard connector, CPU power sockets specified by the manual and the graphics card's required power connections. On a modular supply, inspect both ends of each cable. CPU/EPS and PCIe cables are not interchangeable merely because the plug appears similar. Use the cables supplied with the exact PSU or replacements explicitly approved for it; even cables from the same brand can have different PSU-side wiring. Remove unverified extensions or adapters from the diagnostic setup instead of assuming they are compatible.

6. Look for an assembly fault without forcing a restart

Inspect for a loose screw, an extra motherboard standoff, a pinched cable or a connector visibly inserted incorrectly. Compare the build with the assembly checklist. A system that starts briefly and shuts off should not be repeatedly forced to run; first verify cooling and required connections. If a clear problem is corrected, reassemble safely and make one recorded startup attempt. Avoid taking every part out simultaneously because this removes the evidence needed to understand which change affected the fault.

7. Use a controlled replacement test

If the external supply and connections are correct but the PC still will not start, contact the PSU or motherboard manufacturer or a competent repair technician. A known working, suitable PSU can help isolate the fault, but its own approved cables must replace the old supply's modular cables during the test. A paperclip test or a spinning PSU fan does not establish reliable operation under a PC's load. Provide the exact parts list, photos and attempted checks so support can recommend the next step without repeating the entire process.

  • The symptom is no startup, rather than only a missing display.
  • The outlet, external cable and rear switch are checked.
  • Internal inspection was performed with mains power disconnected.
  • POWER SW and required CPU, board and GPU connections match their manuals.
  • Any suspected PSU failure is handled without opening its enclosure or live shorting.
