How to Build a PC Step by Step: Assembly and Connection Checks

This sequence covers a conventional desktop with a standard motherboard and air cooler or sealed all-in-one cooler. Your case, socket and mounting hardware determine the exact procedure. Keep their manuals open and adjust the order when a compact case makes a connector inaccessible.

Install components with power disconnected, follow the model-specific mounting instructions and inspect every connection before the first start.

1. Prepare the case and motherboard

Disconnect the mains cable and place the case on a stable surface. Remove panels according to the case manual and organise its screws. Match the standoff positions to the motherboard's actual mounting holes; remove an unused standoff that would contact the underside of the board. Install a separate I/O shield if your board needs one. Plan when to route the upper CPU power cable, because a large cooler or radiator may block access later. Keep glass panels on a protected surface.

2. Seat the processor correctly

Put the motherboard on a suitable nonconductive work surface and open the socket using its illustrated procedure. Hold the CPU at its edges and align the marked orientation and locating features. It should sit flat before the retention mechanism is closed; do not force the chip into place. Socket designs differ, so follow the correct instructions for your platform rather than copying another socket's lever sequence. If alignment or contact pins look damaged, stop before fastening the processor. Retain the protective cover for possible service.

3. Install memory and the system SSD

Use the motherboard's recommended slots for the number of DIMMs you have. Open the applicable latches, align the memory notch and press the module evenly until it is properly retained. Some slots have only one movable latch. For an M.2 drive, confirm the selected slot supports its interface and length, position the retention hardware correctly and follow the board's insertion procedure. Fit the specified heatsink and remove only the protective films identified in its instructions. A drive should not be bowed by incorrect spacers or excessive screw pressure.

4. Mount the cooler and motherboard

Fit the cooler's correct socket kit and prepare its contact surface exactly as instructed. Do not add a second layer of thermal compound over usable pre-applied paste. If the cooler has protective film on its base, remove it before contact. Tighten fasteners in the instructed sequence and connect cooling power and monitoring leads to their specified headers. Fit the motherboard to the case without trapping wires underneath it. A large tower cooler may be easier to install after the board; check access before deciding.

5. Install the PSU, drives and graphics card

Mount the PSU with its intake oriented as the case and PSU instructions require. Use only cables confirmed for that exact supply, then route the motherboard and CPU power leads. Mount SATA drives and connect their data and power cables if included. Seat the graphics card in the recommended slot, secure its bracket and add the prescribed support if required. Complete its power connections using the GPU and PSU instructions. Check the connector seating and cable clearance before fitting the side panel; do not use the panel to push a cable into place.

6. Connect the front panel and fans

Use the printed header diagram for the power button, reset switch and indicator LEDs. Match connector labels, alignment keys and any required polarity. Connect case USB and audio to their corresponding headers without forcing a mismatched plug. Fan power and RGB lighting are separate connections; check their voltage and pin arrangement. Do not plug a three-pin 5 V addressable lighting cable into a four-pin 12 V RGB header. Ensure hubs have any required power connection and that attached fans do not exceed a header's permitted load.

7. Inspect, then start once

Check for loose screws, trapped cables, unlatched memory, incomplete power connections and wires touching fan blades. Confirm the CPU cooling system is connected before supplying power. Attach the keyboard and monitor to the intended graphics output, turn on external power and press the case button. Allow the platform to complete initial memory training rather than repeatedly resetting it. Once firmware setup appears, inspect recognised parts and cooling readings. If the machine has power but no picture, follow the no-display sequence instead of dismantling the entire build immediately.

Your checklist

  • No extra standoff or loose screw is under the motherboard.
  • CPU cooler, pump where applicable and fans have the correct connections.
  • Memory, GPU and required power connectors are fully seated.
  • Front-panel, USB and lighting connections match their manuals.
  • Cables clear fan blades and the side panel closes without strain.
