What to Do After Building a PC: BIOS, Windows and Drivers

Reaching the BIOS is the beginning of setup. Confirm that the hardware is recognised and cooling works, install a supported operating system, then establish a stable baseline before enabling optional performance settings.

Verify hardware first, use official installation and driver downloads, and make configuration changes one at a time.

1. Record the first BIOS baseline

Enter firmware setup using the motherboard's documented key. Check the CPU identity, total memory and intended system drive against your parts list. Inspect the CPU temperature and the fan or pump readings that your cooling arrangement should report. A missing drive needs investigation before installation; a rapidly worsening cooling reading needs attention before any load testing. Photograph the firmware version and key information screens. Keep CPU tuning and memory overclocking profiles at their standard settings while establishing that the new system works.

2. Review firmware updates deliberately

Compare the installed BIOS with the CPU support requirement, security notices and release notes for the exact motherboard model and revision. Use the maker's documented update method and correct file; a similarly named board is not interchangeable. Follow its USB-format and filename instructions. Maintain uninterrupted power during the update and allow all documented restart stages to finish. If reusing an encrypted drive, save its recovery key and follow encryption precautions first. After updating, recheck firmware settings instead of assuming they were retained.

3. Check Windows 11 eligibility and prepare media

Microsoft's Windows 11 requirements include a supported processor, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability and TPM 2.0, alongside memory, storage and other requirements. Check the full current list for your hardware. Firmware TPM settings may have a platform-specific name; consult the motherboard instructions rather than clearing a TPM to solve an installation prompt. On another working computer, create official installation media on an empty USB drive. Prepare the correct network driver separately if the installer may not recognise your Ethernet or Wi-Fi hardware. Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use require a network connection and a Microsoft account for initial setup, so prepare both before installation.

4. Install on the intended drive

Use the firmware boot menu to select the official installer in its supported UEFI mode. Before creating or deleting partitions, identify the target drive by capacity and model and confirm that any wanted data is backed up. Disconnecting unrelated drives while power is off can reduce selection mistakes. Follow the installation screens, edition and licence requirements. If the installer cannot find the drive, consult the motherboard's storage-controller instructions and required driver; do not randomly change RAID settings on a drive containing existing data.

5. Add the correct updates and drivers

After reaching the desktop, install operating-system updates and the supported drivers for the actual motherboard, network controller and graphics hardware. The motherboard support page should match your full model and operating-system version. AMD chipset packages, for example, list supported chipsets and systems in their release notes. Restart when requested and verify connectivity, audio and graphics output after each relevant installation. Avoid third-party driver bundles that make it difficult to identify what changed. Cosmetic utilities can wait until the essential devices work.

6. Confirm everyday operation and protect recovery access

Check that Windows reports the expected display resolution and refresh rate, memory capacity and available drives. Test front USB ports, headphones, microphone and network access using devices you know work. Verify operating-system activation and save any device-encryption recovery information securely outside the PC. Keep a copy of your exact parts list, firmware version and driver installers. These records are more useful during troubleshooting than a screenshot of a benchmark score alone.

7. Test before optional tuning

Run the staged stability checks in the linked guide, starting with ordinary use. Only then consider an XMP or EXPO memory profile supported by the platform; these profiles are overclocking settings and still need testing. Record the change and how to revert it. If a new setting causes crashes or prevents startup, restore the known working configuration through the documented recovery procedure. Do not combine a BIOS update, several tuning changes and an unfamiliar stress test into one experiment: a failure would be difficult to trace.
