Samsung 980 500GB

A small Gen3 boot drive when existing storage handles the rest

The decision

The 980 500GB can fit a modest operating-system and application installation, especially when larger files already live on another drive. Its capacity deserves more attention than its model family: a few large games or project caches can make 500 GB inconvenient. Compare the 1 TB version before choosing a smaller drive solely to minimize the first purchase.

Consider it when

  • A modest boot-drive role or a supported older NVMe system with separate bulk storage.

Look again when

  • This will be the only drive for a growing game or media library.

The checks that can change your choice

This 980 is Gen3, not 980 PRO

MZ-V8V500BW is the M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe model without an integrated heatsink. It is not a SATA M.2 drive and should not inherit 980 PRO specifications. Check the motherboard’s actual NVMe slot support and available mounting position before migrating the boot installation.

Plan migration and recovery

Keep a separate verified backup before cloning, formatting or changing a boot drive. Check the firmware and installation guidance for the exact model. Published capacity uses decimal units; formatting, the operating system and your applications leave less space available for files.

Published specifications
