A SATA upgrade when the existing connection is the reason to choose it
The 870 EVO 1TB is useful for a machine with a 2.5-inch SATA bay, a SATA-only upgrade path or no free NVMe socket. It is a different installation proposition from an M.2 SSD: separate data and power connections are required. For a new desktop with a free supported NVMe slot, compare the complete options before choosing SATA merely because the drive is familiar.
