First PC Build Checklist: Parts, Tools and Preparation

A first PC build needs more than a CPU and a graphics card. This checklist helps you separate the parts required for your actual setup from optional extras, then catch missing cables, mounting hardware and installation media before assembly begins.

Prepare one complete parts list, the exact product manuals, a clear workspace and a working route to a display and operating-system installation.

1. Define what the finished computer must do

Write down your applications, the monitor you will use and which existing devices you are keeping. A tower-only budget does not cover a new screen, keyboard, operating-system licence or delivery automatically. Mark every item as already owned, included with another product or still needed. This creates a shopping checklist that can be checked against the boxes on your desk instead of relying on a product photo. Record exact model suffixes: similar names can describe different memory generations, wireless features or cooler bundles.

2. Account for the core components

Most conventional desktop builds need a compatible processor, motherboard, RAM, system drive, power supply, case and CPU cooling. A separate graphics card is conditional: the processor must provide usable integrated graphics, and the motherboard must expose a suitable output, if you plan to omit it. Case fans, network hardware and audio equipment depend on what the selected products already include. Do not assume a retail CPU includes a cooler or that a motherboard with antennas pictured necessarily matches the non-Wi-Fi listing you ordered.

3. Count the small parts before opening everything

Put each product's accessory bag beside its manual. Locate case standoffs and screws, the cooler's correct socket hardware, the SSD retention screw or latch and any required SATA data cable. Check whether thermal compound is already applied. Set aside the PSU's own cables and keep cables from old supplies separate. Photograph the accessory layout before assembly so a missing spacer can be traced to its kit. Avoid buying generic replacement screws until you know the specified length and thread.

4. Prepare tools and a suitable work area

Use a stable, well-lit table with room to place the case on its side. A correctly sized Phillips screwdriver, small screw tray, flashlight and reusable cable ties handle many mainstream builds; compact SSD screws may require a smaller driver. Read the manuals for any supplied specialty tool. Keep drinks away and handle boards by their edges. Use appropriate antistatic precautions and avoid carpeted work areas. Leave the mains power disconnected while installing internal components. Do not work inside the PSU enclosure.

5. Prepare the first boot and installation kit

Have a monitor, compatible video cable and keyboard ready even if the final setup will be wireless. Prepare internet access, including the correct network driver on a separate USB drive if needed. For Windows 11, use Microsoft's official installation-media instructions and verify the current hardware requirements. Creating its USB installer erases that USB drive, so select an empty one deliberately. A second device with downloaded manuals is useful when the new machine has no operating system yet.

6. Perform a final readiness review

Open the motherboard manual to the memory-slot diagram and front-panel header page, then bookmark the cooler installation instructions. Check that every compatibility warning has an answer before building. Inspect delivered items for damage and confirm labels match the planned list. Keep packaging, socket protectors and receipts until the machine has been tested. If a necessary bracket or cable is missing, resolve that specific gap before improvising a mounting arrangement. The next task is assembly, followed by first-boot checks, not immediate performance tuning.

  • Every required part is present and its exact model matches the list.
  • Cooler mount, SSD retention hardware and case screws are accounted for.
  • The display cable has a working graphics output to connect to.
  • Official installer, network access and manuals are ready.
  • Unresolved compatibility or delivery issues have been dealt with.
