Will My GPU Fit My Case? Length, Thickness and Cable Clearance
A graphics card can be shorter than a case's advertised GPU limit and still fail to fit. Check the complete card dimensions, installed cooling hardware, expansion-slot space and the power-cable route before choosing a particular manufacturer version of a GPU.
Match the exact graphics-card model to the case in its intended configuration. Length is only one check: the cooler thickness, side-panel space, connector position and any radiator can decide whether the installation works.
Find the exact card, not just the GPU name
An RTX or Radeon model name identifies the graphics processor family, while different board partners can use different coolers and dimensions. MSI lists its GeForce RTX 5070 12G VENTUS 2X OC at 236 × 126 × 50 mm. Those dimensions belong to that exact model, not every RTX 5070. Save the full model name and official drawing or specification. Check how the manufacturer labels each axis before comparing its width or height with a case diagram.
Compare length in the case configuration you will use
Read the case manual's GPU limit and its footnotes. Determine whether that limit assumes a front fan, an empty radiator mount or a removed drive cage. If you intend to add a radiator, use the clearance for that configuration or request confirmation from the case manufacturer. Do not automatically subtract the entire radiator assembly from the headline length: some cases place fans outside the main chamber, so the reference measurement matters. The result should describe your planned layout, not an empty case.
Check thickness and neighboring parts
Count the rear expansion openings that the card and its bracket require, then check the cooler body against the motherboard slots below it. A nominal two-slot bracket can carry a cooler that extends farther. Look for a capture card, network adapter, bottom fans or a power-supply shroud in the same space. The GPU's fans also need an intake path. An assembly that closes mechanically but presses the fan intake against a panel is a separate airflow concern to resolve before buying.
Reserve space for the power connector
Locate the connector on the exact card and read the card and cable manufacturers' routing instructions. Cable clearance is additional to the card body. NVIDIA's SFF-Ready guidance explicitly includes room for the power-cable bend in its envelope; this is why a bare card-width comparison is incomplete. Do not impose one bend-distance number on every connector or cable. The side panel must close without pushing the connector sideways, and the connection must be fully seated according to the supplied instructions.
Compact cases may trade GPU space for CPU cooling
Fractal's Terra uses an adjustable internal spine, with available GPU and CPU-cooler space changing together. Its support guide also differentiates GPU dimensions rather than offering one unconditional width allowance. Check the chosen spine position with both the card and the cooler in the same plan. Selecting the largest advertised GPU clearance and the largest advertised CPU-cooler clearance independently can describe a combination the case cannot accommodate at one time. Keep the chosen position in your build notes.
Include brackets, risers and the installation path
Check whether a support bracket is supplied or required and where it attaches. Make sure it does not occupy a fan or drive position you need. For a vertical mount or riser-based case, confirm the mounting kit, riser compatibility and resulting distance from the panel. Also consider how the card enters the chassis: a removable front bracket or temporary fan removal may be part of the documented sequence. A final-space measurement alone does not describe every step needed to install the card.
Create a four-line fit record
Before ordering, record four answers: available length with cooling installed, available cooler thickness, space from connector to side panel, and the required mounting hardware. Mark an unknown measurement as unresolved. If the manufacturer's documents do not cover your combination, send both exact product names and the planned radiator position to support. Choose a smaller card variant or a roomier case if the answer remains uncertain. Do not solve a poor fit by forcing the panel or bending the power connection tightly.

- Exact board-partner model and all three dimensions recorded.
- Case clearance checked with the intended radiator and fans.
- Expansion slots, intake space and support bracket checked.
- Power-cable route follows the card and cable instructions.
- Any adjustable case layout checked with the CPU cooler too.
