CPU Cooler and RAM Clearance: Check the Fan, Memory and Case Together
A tower cooler may support your CPU socket yet collide with tall memory or prevent the case panel from closing. Check the heatsink, front fan and installed RAM as one assembly rather than approving each advertised dimension separately.
RAM clearance under a fan is different from clearance under the heatsink. Raising that fan can solve one conflict while increasing total cooler height, so always repeat the case-height check after choosing the memory kit.
Confirm socket mounting before measuring height
Find the exact cooler model and check its socket support, required mounting kit and motherboard compatibility notes. Older stock or a reused cooler may need a bracket that is supplied with newer boxes. The same mounting-hole pattern does not establish that every backplate or spacer is appropriate. Use the cooler manufacturer's instructions for the particular socket. Once the mount is confirmed, note the permitted cooler orientation because rotating the heatsink can change what overhangs the memory slots.
Find the RAM's installed height
Use the specification for the exact memory kit, including any RGB version or heatspreader variant. A capacity and data rate do not identify module height. Then inspect the cooler's drawing to see whether its heatsink, fan or both overhang the populated slots. Some designs leave the slots unobstructed; others provide different clearances in single-fan and dual-fan arrangements. A photo of another build helps you understand the layout, but it should not replace the dimensions for your own kit.
A current NH-D15 example
Noctua's current NH-D15 page lists a 168 mm total height with fans. If the documentation for your supplied revision specifies that height and 32 mm standard RAM clearance, its worked example raises the front fan by 3 mm for 35 mm memory, producing a 171 mm total height. This illustrates the documented arrangement, not a universal formula for every cooler. Older datasheets may differ, so match the supplied cooler and manufacturer instructions instead of mixing dimensions from different revisions. If the revision or installation remains uncertain, keep the fit check unresolved.
Recheck the side panel after a fan adjustment
Compare the resulting total height with the case manufacturer's limit. Include the highest fan frame, clip or cooler feature as directed by the drawing. For an illustrative case that allows 170 mm, a 171 mm assembly is not cleared simply because the heatsink body is shorter. Equality with a published limit also leaves no useful allowance for an unresolved measurement. If the dimensions disagree across official documents, ask the manufacturer which configuration the measurement describes before treating the fit as confirmed.
Choose an approved alternative when RAM is too tall
Possible routes include lower-profile memory, a cooler that leaves the DIMM slots open, or a manufacturer-approved fan arrangement. Noctua describes raising, replacing or removing the overhanging fan for certain models, with consequences for overall height or cooling performance. Check the exact instructions before applying one of those options. Do not assume that removing a fan preserves the cooler's performance under your CPU workload, and do not remove a memory heatspreader just to force an otherwise unsuitable combination to fit.

Look beyond the memory slots
Large coolers can also overlap motherboard heatsinks, the first PCIe slot or the space needed to release a graphics card. Use a manufacturer compatibility database where available, then read any notes attached to the matching board. Check that the fan clips and cables stay clear of blades and that the cooler can be installed using the prescribed orientation. In a compact adjustable case, revisit GPU space as well: changing cooler height may require a different internal position that reduces the card allowance.
Keep the final arrangement with your parts list
Record the cooler model, mounting kit, RAM height, fan arrangement and final case clearance together. This makes a later memory upgrade easier to evaluate: a taller replacement kit may invalidate a fit that worked before. Before applying power, inspect the completed assembly with the system disconnected and make sure the side panel closes freely. Follow the cooler's installation instructions for mounting pressure and fan connections. Mechanical fit is then one completed check; temperatures and noise still need evaluation during actual use.
