DDR4 vs DDR5 Compatibility: Which RAM Fits Your Motherboard?
DDR4 and DDR5 describe different memory generations. They are not interchangeable upgrades for the same memory slot. The practical choice begins with your motherboard and processor, then moves to module type, capacity and the configuration you intend to install.
Buy the memory generation explicitly supported by the exact motherboard. A CPU that supports both DDR4 and DDR5 does not make a DDR4 motherboard accept DDR5, and a BIOS update cannot change the slot's electrical design.
Can DDR5 RAM go into a DDR4 motherboard?
No. Kingston's DDR5 documentation explains that the module design and key position differ from DDR4. Similar length or an identical desktop pin count is not evidence of compatibility. Do not push a module into a slot when the notch does not line up. Read the memory section of the motherboard specification first, then check the RAM label. An adapter or a firmware setting is not a normal upgrade path between these desktop memory generations.
Why some CPUs list both generations
Intel's Core i5-12400F specification lists support for DDR4 and DDR5. That describes the processor's memory-controller options across compatible motherboard designs. It does not promise two generations of slots on every board. For example, ASUS specifies DDR4 for PRIME B660M-A D4. Pairing that CPU with this board means shopping for compatible DDR4 modules. If you want DDR5 while keeping the processor, investigate a different supported motherboard and repeat the CPU and BIOS checks for that board.

Check the module type, not just DDR5 on the box
A matching generation is still only one requirement. Desktop DIMMs, laptop SO-DIMMs and registered server modules are different products. Check whether your board specifies unbuffered memory and whether any ECC function requires a particular processor or configuration. DDR5's internal on-die error correction does not by itself establish full system-level ECC support. Use the complete kit part number in the manufacturer's memory finder or the board's compatibility list, especially when buying used server memory that looks inexpensive.
Choose capacity and stick count together
Plan the capacity you need and the number of modules before comparing advertised speeds. Check the board's total limit, supported module capacities and recommended slot order. A two-module kit and two separately purchased single modules are not the same validation case. For example, a proposed 32 GB setup might use a matched 2 × 16 GB kit; it still needs to appear in the correct DDR generation and form factor. A capacity number alone cannot tell you whether a purchase will fit or start.
Treat advertised speed as a separate decision
The ASUS D4 specification distinguishes ordinary memory rates from entries marked OC and directs buyers to its memory qualification list. MSI's B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI specification likewise lists DDR5 support and configuration-dependent overclocked rates. First establish that a kit is suitable at supported settings. Then decide whether to use an optional memory profile. Do not reject an otherwise correct-generation kit solely because first boot displays a lower rate than the large number on its packaging; check the kit's default and profile specifications.
Upgrade an existing DDR4 PC or replace the platform?
Start with the problem you are solving. If your current work runs out of memory, increasing supported DDR4 capacity may address that without replacing a working motherboard. If you are also changing the CPU platform, compare the combined cost of processor, motherboard and memory, including any cooler mounting parts. DDR5 is not a requirement to fix every slow computer. Check actual application memory use and storage behavior before assigning the problem to the memory generation.
Verify the order before opening the packaging
Compare the invoice, kit label and motherboard specification one final time. Check generation, capacity per module, number of modules and full part number. Keep a photo of the label and note the planned slots in your build list. If an online listing groups DDR4 and DDR5 variants under one product page, confirm the selected variant rather than relying on its shared image or headline. That last check catches a purchasing mistake before installation turns it into a damaged connector.
