CPU and Motherboard Compatibility: How to Check BIOS Support

Start with the complete model names

Write down the CPU's full name, including suffixes such as G, GT, F or X3D. For the motherboard, include size, Wi-Fi, DDR4/D4 and hardware revision where applicable. A support page for a similarly named board is not interchangeable with yours. Match the manufacturer's page to the model printed on the box or board, then open CPU Support. If the exact processor is missing, leave support unresolved and ask the board manufacturer rather than treating the common socket as approval.

A verified example: Ryzen 5 5600GT and B550M Pro4

Both parts are in the RigAtlas catalog. ASRock's official Ryzen 5 5600GT support table identifies the processor as 100-000001488 and lists B550M Pro4 with support BIOS P3.20. The same table lists B550 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ax with P3.30, demonstrating why one version number cannot be applied across a chipset family. This establishes an official support requirement; it does not reveal what firmware a shop's motherboard has installed. Reopen the support entry before ordering, since firmware guidance can change.

Find the version actually installed

On a working ASRock system, its BIOS Version Finding guide points to the version displayed in UEFI setup. It also describes the BIOS-chip sticker as the original version, which is useful only if the firmware has never been updated. For a sealed retail unit, ask the seller to confirm the installed version or provide an update service. Record that answer with the order. A product page saying that the board supports Ryzen 5000 does not settle the requirement for this particular 5600GT.

Choose an update route before removing the old CPU

If your existing CPU starts the board, keep it installed until you have checked the update instructions and confirmed that the intended firmware retains support for the replacement. The B550M Pro4 manual describes Instant Flash inside UEFI. Do not assume every board can update without a working CPU. MSI documents a separate Flash BIOS Button procedure for models equipped with that feature; the button, USB port and file requirements must match that motherboard. A shop update or a different board may be simpler when no supported starting CPU is available.

Read prerequisites as well as the version number

Open the firmware download page and read the release notes, prerequisites and installation method for the exact board revision. Follow any required intermediate update and manufacturer-specific preparation. Save the current settings and arrange reliable power before starting. Follow the manufacturer's completion indicator rather than interrupting an update because the screen is blank. A CPU support entry is not an instruction to downgrade newer working firmware; security fixes and later support guidance may make a newer release the appropriate choice.

Separate CPU support from the rest of the build

After firmware support is resolved, return to memory generation, cooler mounting, cooling capacity and power connections. A BIOS update cannot turn DDR4 slots into DDR5 slots or add a missing cooler bracket. For an upgrade, note whether the replacement includes integrated graphics before relying on the motherboard's display outputs. Keep these checks as separate lines in your parts list so that one confirmed support entry does not hide another unresolved dependency.

What to do when the answer is still unclear

Prepare a short support request with the exact board model and revision, processor identifier, installed BIOS and the support-page link. State whether the machine currently boots and whether you still have the old CPU. Ask which supported update route applies, rather than simply asking whether the socket matches. Keep the purchase on hold if the seller cannot confirm firmware and you have no documented update route. This is an avoidable first-boot problem when checked before the parts arrive.
