Noctua NF-A12x25 vs NF-A12x15 PWM: buy the thickness the mount can use
Compare the exact brown 120mm Noctua PWM fans for standard and slim mounting, including pads, screw length, header power and real airflow constraints.
Use the slim NF-A12x15 when the installation genuinely lacks depth for the standard fan. Check the complete assembly including pads, grille, screws and the adjacent component. The thinner frame is not a guarantee of equivalent cooling or quieter operation; compare results for the actual restriction and chosen speed.
Choose around your situation
Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM (brown, single fan)
Consider NF-A12x25 where the standard depth fits and you have a reason to replace or add a fan. Record the existing temperature and noise problem first.
Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM (brown, single fan)
Consider NF-A12x15 where gaining roughly a centimetre of nominal frame clearance enables a documented fit. Recheck screws; a screw intended for a thicker radiator fan can be unsafe when reused without checking engagement depth.

Check mounting-hole positions; nominal size alone does not confirm fit.

| Check | Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM (brown, single fan) | Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM (brown, single fan) | What it means for your build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal frame | 120 × 120 × 25 mm | 120 × 120 × 15 mm | Mounting-hole size does not establish depth clearance. |
| Including recorded pads | 27 mm | 16 mm | Use the installed arrangement when checking a tight space. |
| Speed specification | Up to 2000 RPM | Up to 1850 RPM | RPM alone is not airflow through a radiator or a measured noise comparison. |
| Motor connection | 12 V · 4-pin PWM | 12 V · 4-pin PWM | Header current and control mode still need checking. |
Worked decision: a fan close to the GPU
Measure the remaining space with the GPU and cables installed, including any protective grille.
Check the exact mounting position accepts a 120mm fan and determine the usable installed thickness. Include pads and protruding screws.
Check the fan’s rated current and total load if using a splitter. Use the header limit from the motherboard manual; connector count is not an electrical rating.
After fitting, ensure blades and cables are clear. Compare temperatures and noise under the same load before deciding whether another fan is needed.
When to keep what you have
Keep supplied fans that already provide adequate cooling at acceptable noise. More fans can add turbulence and noise without resolving the real restriction.
Checks still to make
- Installed thickness, screw length and adjacent parts.
- Header current limit and splitter load.
- Intake/exhaust path and control settings.
