MSI MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WIFI

Four internal SSDs and dual Thunderbolt for a planned Intel workstation

The decision

The MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WIFI is useful when an LGA1851 workstation needs four internal M.2 positions and dual Thunderbolt 4. That is a stronger purchase reason than a generic premium-board label. List the external storage, docks and displays that will use those connections, then compare whether the B860 alternative already covers the actual workflow.

Consider it when

  • An ATX Core Ultra desktop with an explicit multi-drive and external-device plan.

Look again when

  • You have a simple one-drive build or expect every SSD socket to be Gen5.

The checks that can change your choice

Only the first recorded SSD link is Gen5

M2_1 is PCIe 5.0 x4; the other three are Gen4 x4, with M2_4 additionally supporting SATA M.2. Confirm sharing, supported lengths and cooling from the manual. The LGA1851 socket excludes older LGA1700 CPUs even when their memory generation matches.

Prove the complete platform

Find the exact processor in this board’s CPU support list and compare its required BIOS with the installed version. Then check the exact memory kit, occupied slots and front-panel connectors. A matching socket or a published maximum memory capacity is only part of that check.

Published specifications

LGA1851; ATX; Z890; four DDR5 slots; four M.2 storage slots; dual Thunderbolt 4; Wi-Fi 7; 304.8 × 243.84 mm.

Check the manufacturer CPU support list and installed BIOS version before buying. Matching socket and DDR generation do not prove CPU support, memory-profile stability, power-delivery suitability, or PCIe/M.2 lane availability.
