Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB

A large single-drive library without making a Gen5 x4 claim

The decision

The 990 EVO Plus 4TB is worth comparing when storage capacity is the main constraint and a single M.2 socket needs to hold a substantial library. It offers a different purchase question from the 9100 PRO: enough space and suitable behavior for the workload, rather than selecting the highest interface label. Compare a two-drive arrangement if separating working files from the system drive is important.

Consider it when

  • A capacity-heavy desktop or compact machine with few spare NVMe sockets.

Look again when

  • You need a specifically validated Gen5 x4 sustained-transfer setup.

The checks that can change your choice

The 4 TB variant retains the hybrid-width interface

MZ-V9S4T0BW uses PCIe 4.0 x4 / 5.0 x2, not Gen5 x4. Its 2280 bare-drive format requires the selected motherboard’s mounting and cooling arrangement. Check the exact 4 TB datasheet row for capacity-specific behavior rather than borrowing results from another size.

Plan migration and recovery

Keep a separate verified backup before cloning, formatting or changing a boot drive. Check the firmware and installation guidance for the exact model. Published capacity uses decimal units; formatting, the operating system and your applications leave less space available for files.
