Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2TB

A 2 TB drive whose Gen5 label describes two lanes, not four

The decision

The 990 EVO Plus 2TB is a capacity-focused NVMe alternative for a general desktop or active library. Its interface can use PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2, so it should not be compared with a Gen5 x4 drive solely by generation number. Check whether the application actually needs a premium transfer-focused drive before spending more than this storage role requires.

Consider it when

  • A 2 TB NVMe plan where usable capacity and compatible installation are the priorities.

Look again when

  • You are selecting it because you expect the bandwidth of a four-lane Gen5 SSD.

The checks that can change your choice

Read generation and lane count together

Samsung’s datasheet specifies PCIe 4.0 x4 / 5.0 x2 for MZ-V9S2T0BW. The connector’s available link still depends on the motherboard and processor. This is the bare M.2 2280 variant; check its cooling arrangement and the exact socket rather than assuming any Gen5 label settles the choice.

Plan migration and recovery

Keep a separate verified backup before cloning, formatting or changing a boot drive. Check the firmware and installation guidance for the exact model. Published capacity uses decimal units; formatting, the operating system and your applications leave less space available for files.
