How to Estimate PC Power Use and Choose a PSU

Understand CPU and GPU power ratings, check PSU capacity and cables, and use a PC power estimate without treating it as a measurement.

Start here

Use the graphics-card maker’s system recommendation alongside your actual parts and connector requirements. An estimated wattage alone cannot decide which PSU is suitable.

Read what the rating measures

AMD default TDP, Intel Maximum Turbo Power and graphics-card board power are different specifications. Adding them does not produce a measured wall-power result. Actual power depends on the workload, firmware, settings, cooling and other components.

Check the PSU and its cables

Start with the GPU manufacturer’s system power recommendation and check the full configuration. Verify PSU output capacity, the number and type of connectors, case fit and manufacturer instructions. Modular PSU cables must be approved for that exact PSU; a connector that fits is not proof that its pinout is compatible.

Use the estimate as a planning aid

RigAtlas adds the published CPU rating, GPU board power and a 75 W allowance for the remaining system, then rounds up to 10 W. This simple model is shown for transparency. It is not a benchmark, a guaranteed maximum or a complete PSU sizing calculation.

What the RigAtlas estimate includes

The result uses the component ratings recorded in the catalog and a fixed allowance for the remaining system. It does not measure your workload or account precisely for every drive, fan, boost setting or short power excursion. When the required ratings are missing, the estimate remains unavailable. Open Compatibility & power to see the stated basis instead of treating the displayed number as a buying recommendation.

Replacing a PSU does not make its cables reusable

Treat the modular PSU cable set as part of the power supply. Before reusing a cable, match its approved compatibility to the exact replacement PSU; matching the brand or the shape of the plug is insufficient. CORSAIR publishes a cable compatibility table for its own models. Follow the instructions for the actual PSU and GPU, and confirm the connector count and cable clearance in the chosen case.

Your checklist

  • Find the exact graphics-card maker’s system power recommendation.
  • Check PSU output, form factor and enclosure clearance.
  • Confirm CPU and GPU connector types and counts.
  • Use the supplied or explicitly approved modular cable set.
  • Review extra drives, fans, cooling equipment and unresolved power checks.
