ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X870E HERO
Choose the expansion plan before choosing the flagship board
The ROG CROSSHAIR X870E HERO offers five M.2 positions and USB4, which can be valuable in a carefully specified storage-heavy AM5 workstation. Its appeal is the exact set of connections and controls, not a guarantee of faster applications or games. If those features are difficult to name in the planned build, a simpler board deserves the first comparison.
Consider it when
- A multi-drive AM5 workstation whose required expansion layout has been checked in the manual.
Look again when
- You expect every Gen5 socket to operate independently without affecting graphics lanes.
The checks that can change your choice
Two SSD sockets depend on graphics lanes and CPU family
M.2_2 and M.2_3 share CPU graphics resources and are unavailable with the recorded Ryzen 8000 configuration. Their presence is not evidence of five unconditional full-speed SSD links. Check the exact population table before combining several drives with a bandwidth-sensitive graphics workload.
Prove the complete platform
Find the exact processor in this board’s CPU support list and compare its required BIOS with the installed version. Then check the exact memory kit, occupied slots and front-panel connectors. A matching socket or a published maximum memory capacity is only part of that check.

Check the manufacturer CPU support list and installed BIOS version before buying. Matching socket and DDR generation do not prove CPU support, memory-profile stability, power-delivery suitability, or PCIe/M.2 lane availability. Populating M.2_2 or M.2_3 changes graphics-slot lane allocation; Ryzen 8000 has different M.2 availability. See the manufacturer bandwidth table.
