MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI
USB4 and four SSD sockets require a shared-bandwidth plan
The MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI is most interesting for a workstation-style AM5 layout that will actually use USB4, several SSDs and fast networking. Those features add flexibility, but the board is not a promise that every connection can run at its headline speed simultaneously. Write down the external storage and expansion cards as carefully as the CPU and GPU.
Consider it when
- A machine with an explicit need for USB4 devices and multiple internal drives.
Look again when
- The system uses one graphics card and one SSD with ordinary USB peripherals.
The checks that can change your choice
USB4 and M2_2 share resources
MSI documents shared bandwidth between the rear USB4 controller and M2_2; selecting full x4 for that SSD in BIOS disables those USB4 ports. Ryzen 8500/8300 also makes M2_2 unavailable. Setting PCI_E3 to x4 disables M2_3, so check all intended devices together.
Check the manufacturer document ↗Prove the complete platform
Find the exact processor in this board’s CPU support list and compare its required BIOS with the installed version. Then check the exact memory kit, occupied slots and front-panel connectors. A matching socket or a published maximum memory capacity is only part of that check.

| Storage slot M2_3 | M.2 2280, M.2 2260; PCIe NVMe; PCIe 4 x2; PCI_E3 x4 BIOS mode disables M2_3. |

Check the manufacturer CPU support list and installed BIOS version before buying. Matching socket and DDR generation do not prove CPU support, memory-profile stability, power-delivery suitability, or PCIe/M.2 lane availability. M.2_2 shares bandwidth with the rear USB4 ports; its x4 BIOS mode disables those ports. Other lane-sharing and CPU-dependent restrictions are listed by MSI.
