MSI B550-A PRO
An AM4 board for retaining useful parts, with an expansion tradeoff
The B550-A PRO is most interesting as a way to keep DDR4 and a supported AM4 CPU useful in an ATX case. Its six SATA ports can matter more than a newer chipset for an existing drive collection. Count the actual storage and add-in cards first: the second NVMe drive consumes an expansion option rather than simply adding capacity for free.
Consider it when
- An AM4 rebuild with SATA drives and a clearly planned expansion layout.
Look again when
- A new platform is affordable and you have no AM4 parts worth keeping.
The checks that can change your choice
M2_2 disables PCI_E3
MSI states that installing a PCIe SSD in M2_2 makes PCI_E3 unavailable. Put a capture card, storage controller or other add-in card into the plan before assigning that second SSD. M2_1’s PCIe generation also depends on the processor.
Check the manufacturer document ↗Prove the complete platform
Find the exact processor in this board’s CPU support list and compare its required BIOS with the installed version. Then check the exact memory kit, occupied slots and front-panel connectors. A matching socket or a published maximum memory capacity is only part of that check.

Check the manufacturer CPU support list and installed BIOS version before buying. Matching socket and DDR generation do not prove CPU support, memory-profile stability, power-delivery suitability, or PCIe/M.2 lane availability.
