Audio-Technica ATH-M40x

Closed-back listening headphones for a setup that already has a microphone plan.

The decision

ATH-M40x is an analog headphone choice, not a complete gaming headset. It makes sense when you want separate listening and voice equipment, or do not need a microphone at all. Judge comfort and available volume with your actual source; the 35-ohm impedance number alone does not rank sound quality or prove every computer output is sufficient.

Consider it when

  • A suitable 3.5 mm headphone output or audio interface.
  • A user who prefers a separate microphone and detachable listening cable.

Look again when

  • Expecting the supplied stereo cable to carry microphone audio.
  • A USB-only host without an appropriate audio adapter.

The checks that can change your choice

Plan the microphone separately

The included cables provide headphone audio only. Voice calls need a separate microphone or another verified solution; a four-pole socket on the computer does not add a microphone to these headphones.

Match the output, not just the plug

Use a headphone-capable output and confirm comfortable listening volume without distortion. The included 6.3 mm adapter changes connector size, not amplification capability or the source’s available output power.
