Seagate BarraCuda 4TB (ST4000DM004)
Bulk desktop storage with an SSD for the responsive work
BarraCuda ST4000DM004 is a capacity-oriented hard drive for a desktop library rather than a direct replacement for an SSD working drive. It can hold less frequently used files while the operating system and active applications remain on solid-state storage. Choose it with its SMR recording method and desktop workload limits in mind; a large capacity alone does not make it suitable for a NAS or RAID duty.
Consider it when
- A desktop bulk-file role with a proper 3.5-inch bay and separate backup.
Look again when
- The task requires a NAS-rated drive or frequent intensive rewrite workloads.
The checks that can change your choice
Allow for the mechanical drive and its startup demand
The exact 4 TB model is recorded as 5400 RPM SMR, 20.2 mm high, with a 2 A startup requirement. Its typical running wattage is not the startup requirement. Check secure mounting, airflow, SATA cables and the PSU arrangement, especially when several drives start together.
Match the annual workload and operating hours
Seagate lists a 55 TB/year workload rate limit and 2,400 power-on hours/year for ST4000DM004. These are annual usage ratings, not an SSD-style lifetime TBW allowance or a prediction of drive life. Compare both your expected data workload and operating hours with this desktop role. For continuous service or frequent intensive rewrites, assess a model rated for that duty instead of choosing on capacity alone. The figures do not establish whether a particular 24/7 installation will succeed or fail.
Check the manufacturer document ↗Plan migration and recovery
Keep a separate verified backup before cloning, formatting or changing a boot drive. Check the firmware and installation guidance for the exact model. Published capacity uses decimal units; formatting, the operating system and your applications leave less space available for files.
