Seagate BarraCuda 8TB (ST8000DM004)
A larger desktop archive needs a larger recovery plan
BarraCuda ST8000DM004 offers a large desktop storage pool for less frequently used files, but its 8 TB capacity makes backup destination and recovery time central to the choice. Keep responsive application work on a suitable SSD where practical. This is an SMR desktop drive, not evidence that any eight-terabyte disk is appropriate for continuous NAS, RAID or heavy rewrite duties.
Consider it when
- A desktop media or file library with suitable mounting and a verified independent backup.
Look again when
- The intended use needs NAS-rated operation or predictable sustained rewrite behavior.
The checks that can change your choice
The 8 TB enclosure is taller than the 4 TB model
The recorded ST8000DM004 dimensions include a 26.11 mm height versus 20.2 mm for ST4000DM004. Both need a 3.5-inch bay and SATA data/power. Check cage clearance, drive airflow and the 2 A startup requirement instead of sizing the power path only from typical running consumption.
Plan migration and recovery
Keep a separate verified backup before cloning, formatting or changing a boot drive. Check the firmware and installation guidance for the exact model. Published capacity uses decimal units; formatting, the operating system and your applications leave less space available for files.
