Choosing a Gaming Monitor: Resolution, Refresh Rate and Connections
Match your display to the PC you are building, compare 1080p, 1440p and 4K, and check the connection needed for the mode you want.
Choose the display and GPU together. Resolution, refresh rate, motion quality, HDR behavior and the actual video connection matter more than one headline number.
Choose a resolution with a workload in mind
At common desktop resolutions, 1920 × 1080 contains about 2.07 million pixels, 2560 × 1440 about 3.69 million, and 3840 × 2160 about 8.29 million. More pixels can improve detail and working space, but require more rendering work in a comparable scene. Pixel counts are not frame-rate predictions. Consider desk distance, physical screen size, text scaling and the settings you want to use.
Separate refresh rate from the PC frame rate
A monitor’s Hz rating describes its refresh capability; it does not make the PC render that many frames. Compare game performance at your intended resolution alongside the display. For competitive play you may prioritize high refresh and motion clarity; for editing or general work, resolution, text quality and color requirements may matter more. Write down the task rather than selecting the largest available number.
Check the exact supported connection
Look up the monitor’s supported modes for each port and compare them with the GPU outputs and cable. Some combinations depend on compression, color format, bit depth or a particular input. The shape of HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C alone is insufficient. If you plan to use a dock, switch or adapter, check that device too; the complete signal path must support the intended mode.
Treat response time and HDR as separate questions
An advertised response-time figure describes a measurement condition, not every transition at every refresh rate. Look for motion tests at the settings you will use. For HDR, distinguish accepting an HDR signal from displaying a strong HDR image. VESA’s DisplayHDR criteria cover multiple measurable requirements, including brightness, black behavior and color. Check the actual certification and model rather than interpreting a loose HDR label as a performance guarantee.
Compare two monitors with a usage checklist
Use the same priorities for both candidates. A display can have excellent gaming specifications yet be awkward for your desk or daily software. If possible, inspect text, reflections and stand adjustment in conditions similar to your own.

Confirm the operating mode after installation
In Windows, open Settings, System, Display, then Advanced display. Select the intended monitor and inspect the active resolution and refresh rate. Choose a supported rate; Microsoft notes that some selections can change the resolution. Confirm variable-refresh options where supported and check the monitor’s own menu. If the desired mode is absent, inspect the input, cable and documentation before concluding that the GPU is too slow.
